Mikumi National Park, located in southern Tanzania, is known for its vast savannas, abundant wildlife, and convenient accessibility from Dar es Salaam. Covering around 3,230 square kilometers (1,250 square miles), it is part of the larger Selous ecosystem and offers a fantastic, less-crowded safari experience. With open landscapes similar to the Serengeti, Mikumi is sometimes referred to as a “Serengeti Miniature.”
Mikumi is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, wildebeests, and hippos. The park’s open plains make it easier to spot predators like lions, cheetahs, and leopards. The rich ecosystem also supports a variety of smaller mammals, reptiles, and a diverse bird population with over 400 species.
This open, grassy area is a hotspot for wildlife viewing and is often compared to the plains of the Serengeti.
The park is dotted with iconic baobab trees, creating striking scenery and excellent photo opportunities.
Visitors can safely observe hippos and crocodiles in their natural habitat at the park’s hippo pools.
Both day and night game drives are available, with excellent opportunities to see wildlife on the Mkata Floodplain.
With abundant birdlife, Mikumi is ideal for bird enthusiasts, especially during the wet season.
